I first learned about the Rocks District AVA in 2015 at Oregon’s Wine Symposium. At the time, it was presented as being the most heavily researched viticultural area in the country. It sits squarely divided between Oregon and Washington states and what makes it so unique is the lack of topsoil. Instead, the cobblestone rich gravels that line each vineyard row retain heat and allow for power and concentration in the wines that come from it. It looks a lot like the old time streets across Philadelphia, if vines were to poke through.
With all that power comes responsibility on our end. While I'm not trying to quote Peter Parker's Uncle Ben, what I mean is that Syrah can feel a lot like a grape variety that just hit the weight room. Many expressions from this region lean into the ripped sleeve persona, but our compass always points towards elegance. I find myself stretching for the word "poise" when it comes to Pray Tell's Syrah. A wine that honors the varietal typicity without losing focus on balance and beauty.
We pick these grapes from a single, own-rooted vineyard site and let them ferment naturally on 50% of their stems (the other 50% was destemmed). This allows for some beautiful spice and violet florals to build and compliment the dark fruit and tilt towards savory that the varietal is known to exhibit. We fermented and aged this wine in a combination of neutral French oak barrels and terracotta amphora for 18 months, followed by bottle aging for an additional 18 months to allow softer tannins to emerge an flavors to truly integrate with time.
A wine to be sipped and savored for years to come. Only 125 cases total produced.
